Facial Reconstruction Sculpture
This introductory workshop takes a step-by-step
approach to facial reconstruction on the skull
for forensic identification. Students will study
the placement and function of head and neck muscles,
average tissue depths and more in order to recreate
facial features. Each student will work on a
casting of an actual human skull and apply plastilene
clay. All participants
are working on identical castings, which are
for classroom use only. Facial reconstruction
has museum and law enforcement applications and
is useful to portrait sculptors and painters
as well as forensic artists.

Advanced
Facial Reconstruction Sculpture
In this workshop, students apply the methodology
learned in the basic workshop to a specific
individual skull. Students must be able to
work independently to interpret soft tissue
data with a minimum of individual help. Each
student will learn neck anatomy and be expected
to construct the armature for the neck and
shoulders and to sculpt features using data
provided. Unique plaster skull casts will be
supplied for class-room use only.
When
reconstruction is completed, a photograph
of the individual in life will be
shown. In the last exercise, participants
will advance the age of their individual
sculpture after learning aging techniques.
Knowledge of facial aging has many
applications and three-dimensional
age progression has been used in
cases of long-term missing persons
and fugitives.
